Matthew –
I’ve owned the R16 for a couple of months now, and overall I’m quite happy with my purchase. I bought it as a bundle with the RS wheel (providing slightly better value) and bought a GS wheel separately and it’s a significant upgrade over my previous Thrustmaster T500. The torque is very strong and if you think you’ll need a little bit more torque than 9Nm or just want some headroom to avoid clipping, the R16 should be sufficient. There were some complications with my order as it took a while for the GS wheel to arrive, but Ben was very communicative and helpful throughout and I’m pleased with his customer service with Abruzzi. I’m also pleased with how Moza dealt with an issue where I couldn’t open the driver for some reason – after getting in touch, they put out a beta patch within days, and a full patch within a month, so hopefully it wasn’t just YouTube reviewers who were getting special treatment!
My only complaints is that the edges of the GS wheel are a little bit sharp, and the supplied hexagon key to remove the paddle shifters (to install the mute pads) isn’t the right size. I was able to install them on the GS wheel just fine, but I instantly rounded off the bolts on the RS wheel when I tried to do the same with that. Thankfully, the RS wheel isn’t as loud without them unlike the GS wheel so it’s not the end of the world. The flex that you might have seen with the RS wheel in videos is present when you push on the top of the wheel hard, but it’s not an issue when driving normally.
If you’re thinking of buying a Moza wheelbase, there are some other things you should keep in mind:
– Apparently the Alcantara RS wheel is being discontinued and only the leather one will be produced moving forward.
– The wheelbase can be used with any third party wheel as long as you have a NRG/D1 spec quick release with the right number of bearings (4 on the bottom, 6 on the top). If it has buttons, it will need a separate USB connection.
– Take some time to dial in your FFB settings in the drivers. The default settings aren’t great and I would recommend turning off speed-dependent damping or keeping it very low in particular.
– The clutch paddles are a bit jumpy, but perfectly usable for standing starts once you’ve configured the bite point. They’re a bit smoother in separate axis mode but it still might not be ideal for throttle and brake hand controls
Would have rated 5 stars if it weren’t for the certain gripes that I mentioned previously but it’s still definitely worth considering either this or the R9 if you’re looking to upgrade from a belt or gear driven wheel.
